There are multiple different grades of Hastelloy® on the market, and each one has a slightly different elemental composition. Hastelloy® C-276, also known as Hastelloy® C, Nickel Alloy C-276, or Inconel® C-276, is a nickel alloy that contains chromium and molybdenum. The composition breakdown is:

  • Nickel (Ni): 57%
  • Molybdenum (Mo): 15-17%
  • Chromium (Cr): 14.5-16.5%
  • Iron (Fe): 4-7%
  • Tungsten (W): 3-4.50%
  • Manganese (Mn): Up to 1%
  • Cobalt (Co): Up to 2.50%
  • Vanadium (V): Up to 0.35%
  • Silicon (Si): Up to 0.08%

The high levels of molybdenum and nickel and low amounts of carbon in Hastelloy® C-276 greatly reduce its vulnerability to oxidation and corrosion. This tough grade of Hastelloy® has common applications in industries like oil and gas where corrosive substances are present.

Hastelloy® C-276 can withstand exposure to wet chlorine gases like chlorine dioxide and hypochlorite, which is a rare characteristic in a metal, as well as oxidizing salts. Another unique feature is that this metal can be resistant to localized corrosion attacks as well. While other metals may be vulnerable to pitting and cracking from stress corrosion, Hastelloy® C-276 components are resistant to these forms of damage.

Hastelloy® C-276 also holds up well in welding processes. Joints that come into contact with heat during the welding process are generally at risk of corrosion because of grain-boundary carbide precipitation. However, Hastelloy® C-276’s low carbon levels reduce this vulnerability because this makes the metal more resistant to the formation of that precipitate. The alloy maintains resistance to corrosion in reducing or high-temperature environments of up to 1900° F.

Overall, Hastelloy® C-276’s resistance to chemical and corrosion damage makes it a versatile fabrication material choice for chemical processing applications. The material responds well to hot and cold forming processes, machining, and other metalworking techniques besides welding, and manufacturers can form it into precision parts, wire spools and coils, sheets, bar stock, and more.

Resistance to Corrosion

Hastelloy® C-276’s key characteristic of corrosion and oxidization resistance allows it to remain strong in various chemical environments, such as those using:

  • Acetic acids
  • Acetic anhydride
  • Chlorine and chlorine dioxide
  • Cupric chlorides
  • Ferric chlorides
  • Formic acids
  • Hot organic and inorganic media with contaminants
  • Hypochlorite
  • Seawater

Industries and Applications

Heavy-duty industrial and chemical processing applications commonly use this alloy as they rely on durable components with little to no risk of premature failure and wear. Some of the most common applications for Hastelloy® C-276 include:

  • Dampers
  • Ducting
  • Evaporators
  • Heat exchangers
  • Piping
  • Reaction vessels
  • Scrubbers
  • Stack gas reheaters and liners

Industrial sectors such as power generation, oil and gas, marine, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical, and wastewater treatment utilize these parts with Hastelloy® construction. Manufacturers, chemical processors, and municipal services trust it because of its ability to withstand constant exposure to corrosive elements and conditions that would quickly oxidize or corrode components constructed from other metal alloys.
