Monel in the Aerospace Industry

Monel, a nickel-copper alloy formulated in the 1900s, has become an essential material for engineers due to its combination of performance and workability.

Adaptable to casting, welding, and both hot and cold working, the alloy has become popular for use in many applications and industries.

Monel is generally comprised of roughly 68% nickel and 29% copper, while the remaining variables can see adjustments in order to create different grades including Monel 400, Monel 401, Monel 404, Monel K-500, and Monel R-405 — for unique applications

Commons Uses of Monel in Aerospace

Monel’s strength and corrosion resistance allow for use in a range of aerospace applications. After cold working, the alloy’s tensile strength increases to 125,000 psi, while its corrosion resistance makes it ideal for exhaust manifold and carburetor applications. And unlike stainless steel alloys, Monel can easily withstand the intense heat and pressure in combustion chambers.

Monel has also been regularly used to manufacture frame structures, and as the ‘skins’ of experimental aircraft and rockets as it is resistant to the heat created by high speed flight.

These high temperatures caused by aerodynamic friction require that a material retains its strength in order to maintain shape and perform as designed. Monel 400, in particular, is able to retain its shape and strength up to 1300 °C.

Monel can be found in tubes, pipes, rods, and wire for various aerospace applications, as well as in gears and chains for operating landing gear. It’s a powerful choice for structural parts and frames and is especially common in rivets.

Monel rivets often take the place of corrosion-resistant steel, holding parts in place in engines, exhaust assemblies, and more. Additionally, Monel safety wiring is often used to ensure that fasteners and rivets do not come undone.

Monel can also be found in a range of applications including chemical processing and marine applications due to its excellent resistance to corrosive chemicals and environments.
